From the tip of its nose to its feathery, gently wagging tail, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a beauty. However; it should not be regarded simply as an elegant accessory, as many Cavaliers enjoy traditional spaniel activities in the field. In fact, adaptability is the Cavalier's middle name - whether you want a friend in your small house or flat who is content with short walks or an active companion for country rambles, the Cavalier is a good choice. In addition to its beauty, it possesses a wonderful temperament, is good with children and is easy to care for.
In her book, Margaret Workman gives a detailed account of this breed, from early examples of small dogs kept solely as companions, through the emergence of companion/sporting spaniels at the court of King Charles II, to the revival of the Blenheim Spaniel of the old type in 1925, when the Cavalier began to evolve as a separate breed from the King Charles Spaniel or 'Charlie'. She then goes on to tell us how it went on to become a popular show dog, and is now the seventh largest breed in terms of registrations. She also gives us the benefit of her considerable experience in topics such as Cavalier health, general care, grooming, showing and breeding. Of special interest to the serious breeder will be the chapter dedicated to genetics and successful breeding and the appendix of colour breeding charts.
Margaret Workman has owned Cavalier King Charies Spaniels for around 25 years and has bred and shown many dogs under her Costara affix. Since her retirement from teaching, her Cavaliers have been her main interest in life and she says, 'The happiest part of my day is always my walk with the dear dogs.' All her show dogs have descended from her original bitch, Tara, and all have attained stud book numbers. She is also a much respected judge of the breed in this country and overseas.

CAVALIER KING CHARLES, NEW OWNER'S GUIDE

Possessing an extensive background in breeding and judging, author MEREDITH JOHNSON SYNDER and her husband Al immediately fell in love with the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel during a trip to the famed Windsor Dog Show in London, England. After visiting as many leading breeders as possible, they became deeply involved with the Cavalier as breeders and exhibitors upon their return home. During this time, they met Lamont Yoder, who shared the Johnson Synder's devotion to the Cavalier, and the trio soon formed a successful family affair under the Rattlebridge cavalier prefix.
The Rattlebridge team became significantly involved in establishing the American Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club, which eventually became recognized by the AKC as the breed's official parent club. Meredith was one of the 12 founding members of the new organization, was appointed as vice president, and became a member of the judge's education committee, as well as editor of the club's annual publication.
To date, the Rattlebridge team has taken 17 Cavaliers to their AKC championships, 11 of which were homebred.
