Canine Care And Training Program

I wonder what class is going to be about today! I wish I had my dog right now.
That possibility may be closer than you think.

Have you heard about the CKC Canine Care and Training Program?

The Canine Care and Training Program (CCTP) is an exciting program developed by Continental Kennel Club for the purpose of teaching students about the proper, responsible, and ethical treatment, handling, and training of dogs.

The CCTP is a school-based program created for the purpose of teaching the fundamentals of canine care, handling, and training in a classroom setting. The CCTP begins with a Level 1 curriculum, called Basic Canine Care and Handling. The Level 1 curriculum is equivalent to a ½ credit course for high school students. Teachers must be certified by Continental Kennel Club to teach the curriculum. Teacher certification is conducted by CKC and requires approximately 24 hours of course work. Teachers may complete the Level 1 certification requirements online or attend an In-service workshop coordinated through their school district or department of education. If you are a parent, teacher, or educational administrator interested in quality programs for students, this page should give you a comprehensive look at this exciting opportunity for the classroom.

What is the Continental Kennel Club all about?

“Bringing People and Dogs Together”

Continental Kennel Club is an all-breed canine registration organization located in Louisiana. CKC keeps pedigree records for dogs, sponsors a variety of events for dogs and dog owners, and produces educational material for the dog world. Continental Kennel Club supports the National FFA, and provides workshops there to educate teachers about the benefits of the Canine Care and Training Program for the classroom.

Next year, Continental Kennel Club will be celebrating its 20th anniversary. From its beginning, CKC has pursued several main goals: providing quality registration services for breeders and kennel owners, producing unique services and products for dog owners, creating fun and exciting events for dog enthusiasts, and producing educational resources about canines in our culture. Our vision for the CCTP is twofold: that it will prepare students who are interested in working in any field of work or study involving canines; and, that it will serve as a vehicle to educate future generations about responsible dog ownership in our society. We invite teachers and educators to take part in this vision through a program that is doing just that – the CKC Canine Care and Training Program.

The need for education about canines in society is real.

As the number of pets in homes grows larger each year, the demand for newer and better pet services, products, and educational information grows proportionately. The pet industry topped 40 billion in sales in 2008 with continued growth projected in 2009 and 2010. Cats and dogs are no longer considered just pets – they are treated as family members. And with over 45 million households having at least 1 dog, the demand for dog services, products, and educational resources will remain high for years to come.
