Description: This beautiful dog, the Samoyed, with its trademark snow white coat has been attracting dog enthusiasts for centuries and for good reason.

Originally called Bjelkier dogs by the Samoyedes, their native breeders, they were bred for hunting, herding, sledding and as a part of the family. They were allowed to enter the eskimo homes at puppyhood and immediately became part of the tribe. They were prized possessions among the Samoyede people and were protected as well.

The Bjelkier dog name was changed to Samoyed by Ernest Kilburn-Scott who became the founder of the breed in England in the 19th century. Although not recognized until the 20th century, it is known that the Samoyed breed dates back as far as 1000 B.C. The appearance of the Samoyed hasn’t changed much from that of its ancestors. The double white coat on the breed serves as insulation in the harsh winter months and keeps them cool in the heat of summer. Their face always has a happy look, as if they are smiling all the time. The ears are small and erect and covered by thick hair to prevent freezing in the arctic.

The Samoyed doesn’t require much grooming. Their coat sheds most dirt, so daily brushing is usually all that needs to be done. When it is time for a bath, however, make sure you saturate the entire coat with water, down to the skin, to penetrate the undercoat. The Samoyed is well-tempered and is happiest when it has a family to take care of. They are great around children and adults and will be a joy for any family to have.
