With their beautiful golden coat and their extremely friendly demeanor, the Golden Retriever has become one of the most popular family dogs. Don’t think that they are big lap dogs though. These dogs enjoy working and playing. Being part of the retriever group, the Golden Retriever is a favorite among hunters. Like the Labrador Retriever, the Golden’s keen sense of sight and smell and their instinctive ability for retrieving make them one of the most sought after canines for bird hunters.

It doesn’t stop there for this wonderful breed. They are also used throughout the world as therapy dogs for the sick and elderly, guide dogs for the blind and companion dogs for the handicapped. The Golden’s love and loyalty to people has made them one of the most popular breeds in the United States, and they will continue to thrive as one of America’s favorites.
  
Appearance: Head: Broad between ears, with a rounded skull. Eyes: Medium size, dark brown in color, set well apart and deep in sockets. Ears: Short, fall close to cheek. Muzzle: Medium and tapering to a point. Nose: Black and self-colored according to coat. Bite: Scissor or level. Neck: Medium, long, muscular. Topline: Level. Chest: Deep, well developed forechest. Body: Overall balance and symmetry. Legs: Muscular, straight, with good bone. Feet: Medium sized, round, compact, thick pads. Tail: Thick, muscular at base. Movement: Quick, yet well balanced movements. Temperament: Fearless, loyal, and willing to please.
*The Golden Retriever makes an excellent companion dog and is being used more and more as a guide for the blind. He also does very well in obedience competition.
